Tax Investigation Protection

What is it?

HMRC Compliance resources actively target businesses and individuals to check that correct tax has been paid - its objective is to recover underpaid tax. HMRC can challenge any part of your business and personal tax affairs.

You don’t have to have done anything wrong for HMRC to select you for an enquiry - anyone can be investigated. No business is too small or too large, from PLC to sole trader and no business type is excluded.

It may be a PAYE or VAT visit, a technical challenge or a detailed books and records enquiry, whatever form the investigation takes, Professional support to handle the challenge will help ensure you get a fair result.

Do I need it?

The risk of an enquiry is real and even if the outcome requires no adjustment to your tax position, you’ll still have to pay your defence costs. No-one can prevent an investigation, but a tax investigations package removes concerns about the costs of enquiries and this is why we strongly recommend that all our clients consider subscribing.

All communications with HMRC, including face-to-face meetings are covered. HMRC’s assertions and assumptions will be challenged and argued to ensure you receive the best defence to protect your tax position. As part of the cover you also receive 24/7/365 access to a business legal helpline team of qualified solicitors for employment law, health and safety matters and commercial issues.

An Example?

HMRC opened a full enquiry into a self-employed caterer. The Inspector requested all of the books and records at the outset and subsequently made further enquiries about the expenses claimed. The practice managed to close the enquiry via correspondence alone, with no adjustments required to the return. Yet fees still amounted to £2,000 but were covered under the package.

OK, how do I get it?

For a small yearly cost, paid monthly, you can secure cover. The fee is dependent on the nature of your business and tax arrangements - talk to Kris and the team to confirm and we’ll take care of the rest.
